White House Denies Iranian Report on Draft MoU with US

The White House dismissed on Wednesday a report from Iranian state television that Tehran had secured a draft of a preliminary, unofficial memorandum of understanding with the United States. The administration labeled the report as false and described the alleged document as entirely fabricated.

This denial introduces further ambiguity into discussions concerning the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media had claimed that the draft framework included measures related to the strategic waterway, such as reinstating commercial shipping to levels seen before recent conflicts and ending a naval blockade.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime passage, vital for global energy shipments and international trade, where any disruption could have significant worldwide repercussions.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed that talks with the US are ongoing but emphasized that no definitive agreement has been reached regarding the Strait of Hormuz. It also noted that nuclear negotiations with Washington are currently not underway.

The White House’s rejection indicates that although diplomatic engagement may persist, the existence of a draft agreement between the two nations remains contested.
