Karachi Braces for Rainfall as New Westerly Weather System Approaches

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced the arrival of a westerly wave over Karachi starting Tuesday evening, which is expected to bring intermittent rainfall to the city from Wednesday onward. Residents should prepare for a shift in weather conditions as the sky remains partly cloudy to overcast today, with temperatures potentially reaching a high of 33 degrees Celsius alongside a humidity level of 88 percent, creating a muggy atmosphere.

the forecast, Karachi will witness showers between March 25 and 29, accompanied by gusty winds and thunderstorms. This weather pattern is part of a broader system impacting the region, with several districts across Sindh, including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Dadu, Kashmore, Jacobabad, Larkana, and again Kashmore, also expected to receive rainfall during this period. The precipitation is likely to provide some relief from the recent dry spell but may also cause disruptions in daily activities.

Meanwhile, the PMD has highlighted that a western weather system will enter parts of Balochistan on March 24, intensifying by the night of March 27. This system is predicted to bring wet spells to a wide range of districts such as Panjgur, Turbat, Kech, Awaran, Gwadar, Pasni, Marwar, as well as Lasbela, Khuzdar, Chagai, Dalbandin, Kalat, Sibi, Kohlu, Quetta, Barkhan, Naseerabad, Loralai, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qila Abdullah, Qila Saifullah, Nushki, Harnai, Zhob, Qalat, and Mastung. The extended rainfall could have significant implications for agriculture and water reservoirs in these areas.

It is worth noting that Karachi recently experienced disruptions during Eid-ul-Fitr prayers due to sudden rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Several localities, including Malir, Shah Faisal, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and Gulistan-e-Johar, reported downpours. Strong winds and rainfall were also recorded in neighborhoods such as Scheme 33, Safoora Chowrangi, Sohrab Goth, North Nazimabad, Federal B Area, North Karachi, Buffer Zone, Guru Mandir, Lasbela, Liaquatabad, and Nazimabad. Coastal zones like Sea View and Clifton were not spared either, receiving rainfall that affected outdoor activities and traffic flow.

Earlier this month, the city was hit by a severe thunderstorm accompanied by gale-force winds, which tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people. This recent weather event underscores the vulnerability of Karachi to sudden and intense weather changes, especially during transitional seasons. Authorities have urged citizens to stay alert and take necessary precautions as the new weather system unfolds over the coming days.
