PM Shehbaz Calls for Dialogue with Iran’s Pezeshkian to Ease Regional Tensions

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif engaged in a significant telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, emphasizing the urgent need for dialogue and diplomatic efforts among neighboring countries to resolve ongoing conflicts. This exchange highlights Pakistan’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in a region currently facing heightened tensions. The Prime Minister’s office released a statement on Monday underscoring the importance of these discussions in the broader context of regional harmony.

During the call, Prime Minister Shehbaz extended warm greetings on the occasions of Eid ul Fitr and Nowruz to President Pezeshkian and the people of Iran, reflecting the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations. The Iranian president responded with equal warmth, reciprocating the good wishes and expressing his hopes for continued friendly relations between the two countries. This mutual exchange of goodwill serves as a reminder of the longstanding brotherhood shared by Pakistan and Iran.

As a neighboring country with close historical and religious bonds, Pakistan expressed its solidarity with the resilient Iranian people amid the ongoing hostilities in the Gulf region. The Prime Minister conveyed heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of lives and extended prayers for the swift recovery of those injured or displaced by the conflict. This gesture underscores Pakistan’s empathetic stance and its concern for the humanitarian impact of the violence unfolding in the region.

Prime Minister Shehbaz also voiced serious apprehensions regarding the escalating conflict in the Gulf, which has destabilized markets and heightened global economic uncertainties. He stressed the critical need for all parties involved to collectively pursue de-escalation measures and return to constructive dialogue and diplomacy. The Prime Minister highlighted that resolving these differences through peaceful means is essential not only for regional stability but also for the welfare of the wider Muslim Ummah, whose unity is more crucial now than ever before.

In addition to expressing Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach efforts, Prime Minister Shehbaz reassured the Iranian leadership of Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to playing a constructive and facilitative role in fostering peace across the region. This approach aligns with Pakistan’s broader foreign policy objectives aimed at promoting harmony and preventing further escalation of conflicts that could have far-reaching consequences.

It is important to note that the conflict, which began on February 28 following military actions by the United States and Israel against Iran, has resulted in over 2,000 casualties. The war has not only caused immense human suffering but has also disrupted global markets, pushed fuel prices higher, and intensified fears of inflation worldwide. Furthermore, the conflict has strained alliances within the Western defense community, adding layers of complexity to an already volatile geopolitical landscape.

Against this backdrop, Pakistan’s call for dialogue and peaceful resolution reflects a pragmatic and humanitarian approach, aiming to mitigate the adverse effects of the conflict on both regional neighbors and the international community. The Prime Minister’s conversation with President Pezeshkian serves as a timely reminder of the power of diplomacy in addressing even the most challenging disputes.
