Nehal Hashmi Appointed as New Governor of Sindh, Replacing Kamran Tessori

The federal government has officially put forward the name of Nehal Hashmi, a seasoned politician from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), as the new Governor of Sindh. This nomination comes as part of a significant political reshuffle, with Hashmi set to replace the current Sindh Governor, Kamran Tessori. The Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has formally submitted the proposal to the President of Pakistan for final approval, signaling a key change in the provincial leadership.

In a recent meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif personally congratulated Nehal Hashmi on his appointment, highlighting the importance of this transition. The gathering also included prominent figures such as Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs, Rana Sanaullah. Their presence underscored the political weight and strategic significance of this new appointment within the federal government’s broader agenda.

Nehal Hashmi brings considerable experience to the role, having served as a senator representing the PML-N from March 2015 until March 2021. His long-standing involvement in national politics and familiarity with legislative processes are expected to influence his approach as governor. This appointment marks a notable shift, especially given the political dynamics in Sindh, where the governor’s role is often intertwined with provincial and national party interests.

The decision to replace Kamran Tessori, who is affiliated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), has been the subject of much speculation and discussion in recent months. Social media platforms were abuzz with rumors about Tessori’s possible removal, reflecting the growing unease within the Sindh government regarding his tenure. Since early 2024, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which governs Sindh, has expressed strong reservations about Tessori’s performance and political stance.

In April 2024, the PPP openly criticized Tessori, accusing him of deepening political divisions and exacerbating the urban-rural divide within Sindh. The party urged the federal government, led by the PML-N, to reconsider his position and appoint someone who could foster greater unity and cooperation. Despite these calls, the MQM-P leadership dismissed the rumors of Tessori’s removal in December 2025, attempting to maintain a narrative of stability and continuity.

It is important to note that the PPP’s repeated demands for Tessori’s dismissal stemmed from allegations that the Governor House was being used for partisan political activities, which they claimed undermined the province’s governance. The appointment of Nehal Hashmi is therefore seen as a strategic move by the federal government to address these concerns and recalibrate the political balance in Sindh. As this transition unfolds, all eyes will remain on how the new governor navigates the complex political landscape of the province.
