Punjab Government Extends Section 144 for Another Week Amid Security Concerns

The Punjab government has announced the extension of Section 144 across the entire province for an additional seven days, a move aimed at strengthening security measures amid rising concerns over potential terrorist activities and the preservation of public order. This decision follows careful consideration of intelligence inputs highlighting possible threats to peace and stability in the region.

Section 144, which prohibits public gatherings of four or more individuals, has been enforced to prevent any unlawful assemblies that could escalate into violence or unrest. The Home Department has issued an official notification detailing the restrictions, which explicitly ban rallies, protests, and any form of public congregation without prior authorization from the relevant authorities. This step is intended to minimize risks associated with large crowds, which intelligence agencies fear could be targeted by extremist elements.

While the order imposes strict limitations on public assemblies, certain exceptions have been made to accommodate essential social and administrative functions. Gatherings related to weddings, funerals, and burial ceremonies are exempted from the ban, recognizing their cultural and social significance. Additionally, meetings held within government and semi-government offices, as well as court proceedings, will continue without interruption, ensuring that official business and judicial processes are not hindered by the security measures.

The notification also includes a comprehensive prohibition on the display and use of any type of weapons in public spaces, reinforcing efforts to curb violence and maintain law and order. Law enforcement agencies have been directed to enforce these restrictions rigorously, although personnel engaged in official duties are exempt from the ban, allowing them to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

Authorities have emphasized that the extension of Section 144 will remain in effect until March 14, during which time security forces will remain vigilant to prevent any incidents that could threaten the safety of citizens. This precautionary measure reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the province against terrorism and sectarian violence, particularly in light of recent intelligence reports indicating that sensitive gatherings might be targeted by hostile actors.

Overall, the continuation of Section 144 across Punjab underscores the delicate security situation and the proactive steps being taken to ensure public safety. Residents are urged to comply with the restrictions and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and stability throughout the province during this period.
