Azerbaijan Begins Evacuation of Diplomats from Iran Amid Rising Tensions

In a significant escalation of diplomatic tensions, Azerbaijan has initiated the evacuation of its diplomatic staff from Iran, citing concerns for their safety. This move comes shortly after Azerbaijan accused Iran of violating its airspace with four drones, an incident that reportedly resulted in injuries to four individuals in the Nakhchivan exclave. The announcement was made on Friday by Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov during a press briefing held in the capital city of Baku.

Bayramov detailed that the evacuation orders, issued under the direct instruction of President Ilham Aliyev, involve withdrawing personnel from both the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran and the consulate general located in Tabriz. Tabriz, a major urban center in northwestern Iran, is home to a substantial population of ethnic Azerbaijanis, making the consulate’s presence there particularly significant. The Foreign Minister emphasized that the safety of Azerbaijani diplomats and staff cannot be compromised amid the current volatile circumstances.

The backdrop to this diplomatic fallout is the reported drone incursion into Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan exclave, a geographically separated region bordered by Armenia, Turkey, and Iran. On Thursday, Azerbaijani officials expressed strong condemnation of what they described as an unauthorized Iranian drone operation crossing into their territory. President Aliyev responded with a stern warning, indicating that Azerbaijan reserves the right to retaliate against such provocations. Iran, however, has denied any involvement in launching the drones, further complicating the already strained relations between the two neighbors.

Relations between Azerbaijan and Iran have historically been fraught with tension, often influenced by geopolitical dynamics in the region. One of the key points of contention remains Azerbaijan’s growing strategic partnership with Israel, a development that has drawn sharp criticism from Tehran. Iran views this alliance with suspicion and concern, perceiving it as a threat to its regional influence and security interests. The recent drone incident and subsequent diplomatic fallout underscore the fragile nature of their bilateral ties.

As the situation unfolds, the evacuation of Azerbaijani diplomats from Iran marks a serious step that could have broader implications for regional diplomacy and security. The international community continues to monitor these developments closely, aware that any further escalation could destabilize the already sensitive balance in the South Caucasus and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan remains vigilant, signaling its readiness to defend its sovereignty while seeking to protect its citizens and diplomatic representatives abroad.
