Iranian Sailors Recover in Sri Lanka After Deadly US Submarine Strike in Indian Ocean

Survivors of a recent US submarine attack on an Iranian naval vessel are currently receiving medical care at a hospital in the Sri Lankan port city of Galle. This development comes a day after a tragic incident in the Indian Ocean claimed the lives of at least 87 Iranian sailors. The attack has sent shockwaves through the region, intensifying tensions far beyond the Gulf waters where much of the ongoing conflict has been concentrated.

Officials at the National Hospital in Galle, along with naval personnel involved in the rescue mission, confirmed that 87 bodies were recovered and brought to the facility. These casualties were retrieved following a distress signal sent early Wednesday morning from the Iranian warship IRIS Dena. The swift response by military rescue teams was crucial in saving the lives of 32 sailors, who are now under medical supervision for relatively minor injuries. Hospital authorities have indicated that these survivors are expected to be discharged soon, possibly within the same day.

Despite the successful rescue of several crew members, search and rescue operations are still underway for approximately 60 sailors who remain unaccounted for. Efforts to locate and recover these missing personnel are continuing with urgency, as authorities hope to bring closure to families and officials alike. The gravity of the situation is underscored by the presence of security personnel guarding the hospital ward where the survivors are being treated, highlighting the sensitive nature of the incident.

The attack itself marks a significant escalation in the ongoing hostilities between the United States and Iran, extending the battlefield far beyond the Persian Gulf. While US and Israeli forces have been engaged in strikes against Iranian targets in the Gulf region, this submarine assault took place hundreds of miles away in the Indian Ocean, signaling a dangerous widening of the conflict. Iranian retaliation with missile and drone attacks has been reported in response to these provocations.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed the incident from the Pentagon, describing the sinking of the Iranian warship as a deliberate act by an American submarine. He emphasized that the vessel, which had believed itself to be operating safely in international waters, was struck by a torpedo that caused catastrophic damage. A Pentagon-released video purportedly shows the moment the warship was hit by a massive explosion, which tore apart the rear section of the ship, lifting it out of the water before it began to sink rapidly from the stern.

This incident not only highlights the increasing volatility in the region but also raises questions about the rules of engagement and the risks of naval confrontations in international waters. As the search for missing sailors continues and survivors recover, the international community watches closely, concerned about the potential for further escalation in this already tense geopolitical landscape.
