Iranian Sailors Treated in Sri Lanka Following US Submarine Attack on Warship

In the aftermath of a devastating attack on an Iranian naval ship in the Indian Ocean, survivors have been transported to a hospital in Sri Lanka’s southern port city of Galle for urgent medical treatment. This development comes just one day after the Iranian warship IRIS Dena was struck by a torpedo launched from a United States submarine, resulting in significant casualties and widespread shock across the region.

Authorities at the National Hospital in Galle confirmed that 87 bodies were brought in following a swift rescue operation initiated after the Iranian vessel sent out a distress call early Wednesday morning. Military teams responded promptly to the emergency, managing to recover both the deceased and survivors from the waters. The hospital has been working tirelessly to provide care for the injured sailors, many of whom sustained minor wounds and are expected to be discharged soon.

Meanwhile, search and rescue efforts remain ongoing as approximately 60 crew members are still unaccounted for. Officials have vowed to continue combing the area in hopes of locating additional survivors or recovering more bodies. The situation remains fluid, with naval forces coordinating closely to manage the aftermath of this unprecedented strike far from the usual conflict zones.

Inside the hospital, medical staff have been attending to the 32 sailors admitted with relatively minor injuries. Security personnel have been stationed outside ward number 58 to maintain order as doctors conduct regular rounds and nurses provide necessary care. The atmosphere is tense but controlled, reflecting the gravity of the incident and the urgency of the medical response.

This attack represents a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, extending the battleground well beyond the Gulf region where most recent confrontations have taken place. Until now, US and Israeli forces have primarily targeted Iranian assets closer to home, with Tehran retaliating through missile and drone strikes. The strike on IRIS Dena signals a broader geographical expansion of hostilities, raising concerns about further destabilization in international waters.

At a press briefing held at the Pentagon, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that an American submarine was responsible for the torpedo attack on the Iranian warship. He described the targeted vessel as operating in international waters and emphasized the precision of the strike. “An American submarine sank an Iranian warship that believed it was safe,” Hegseth stated. “Instead, it was struck by a torpedo — a quiet end.”

Visual evidence released by the Pentagon purportedly shows the moment of impact, capturing a massive explosion at the rear of the ship. The footage depicts the stern being torn apart and lifted out of the water before the vessel began to sink beneath the waves. This stark imagery underscores the destructive power of the assault and the severity of the damage inflicted on the IRIS Dena.

As the international community watches closely, the incident has sparked widespread debate about the implications for regional security and maritime law. With survivors receiving care in Sri Lanka and search operations continuing, the full human and geopolitical consequences of this attack are still unfolding.
