Sri Lanka Conducts Swift Rescue of Iranian Frigate Crew Near Its Waters

In a dramatic maritime rescue operation on Wednesday, Sri Lankan authorities saved 30 crew members from the Iranian frigate Iris Dena after the warship began sinking just outside the island nation’s territorial waters. The incident unfolded early in the morning when the frigate, carrying a total of 180 personnel, sent out a distress signal alerting nearby naval forces. Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed the successful evacuation of the sailors and highlighted the prompt response by the country’s naval and air units.

The exact cause behind the frigate’s sudden distress remains unclear, as officials have yet to release detailed information regarding what led to the vessel’s critical condition. However, Minister Herath informed parliament that several of the rescued sailors sustained injuries and were immediately transported to a hospital located in the southern city of Galle, approximately 115 kilometers from Colombo. The hospital was placed on high alert to provide urgent medical care to those affected by the incident.

Responding swiftly to the emergency, the Sri Lankan Navy deployed two of its ships along with an aircraft to carry out the rescue mission. Navy spokesperson Buddhika Sampath emphasized that the operation was conducted in strict accordance with Sri Lanka’s international maritime responsibilities, particularly within its designated Search and Rescue (SAR) region in the Indian Ocean. He underscored the country’s commitment to humanitarian assistance at sea, regardless of the nationality of those in distress.

Meanwhile, the situation sparked questions within the Sri Lankan parliament, where an opposition member inquired whether the Iranian frigate had been targeted in recent US-Israeli military actions against Iran. This query, however, did not receive an immediate response from government officials, leaving the cause of the incident open to speculation. The geopolitical tensions in the region add a layer of complexity to the event, but no official confirmation has linked the sinking to hostile activities.

The rescue operation highlights Sri Lanka’s strategic position in the Indian Ocean and its role in ensuring maritime safety in a region often marked by political and military challenges. The country’s naval forces demonstrated their readiness and capability to respond to emergencies swiftly, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s reputation as a responsible maritime actor. As investigations continue, further updates on the condition of the injured sailors and the circumstances surrounding the frigate’s distress are awaited.
