The Government of Pakistan has announced an immediate and comprehensive ban on the operation of all drones across the country. This prohibition covers every type of drone, including those used for recreational purposes as well as commercial activities. The decision has been driven by growing security concerns and aims to prevent any potential misuse of unmanned aerial devices that could threaten public safety.
Effective immediately, the ban will remain in place for a period of 60 days and applies uniformly across all provinces. Provincial authorities have been directed to enforce the restrictions rigorously, ensuring that no exceptions are made except for law enforcement and intelligence agencies, which retain the authorization to operate drones for official purposes. The government has empowered police officers, particularly Station House Officers (SHOs), to take strict action against any violations under Section 144 of the law, which governs public safety measures.
In line with the federal directive, the Sindh Home Department has also implemented a similar ban within the province. This includes a prohibition on the use of drones, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and quadcopters, commonly employed for aerial photography and surveillance. The Sindh authorities have emphasized that this measure is crucial to enhancing security protocols and preventing the misuse of aerial technology that could compromise the safety of the public and critical infrastructure.
The decision to impose this ban follows recent security incidents where Pakistan’s anti-drone defense systems successfully intercepted and neutralized multiple unauthorized drones in key cities such as Abbottabad, Swabi, and Nowshera. These attempts were reportedly linked to Fitna al-Khwarij, a group allegedly supported by the Afghan Taliban, which sought to carry out attacks using small drones. Fortunately, the defense systems managed to shoot down all incoming drones, and no casualties were reported during these thwarted attacks.
These events have once again highlighted the ongoing security challenges faced by Pakistan, particularly the troubling connections between terrorist factions operating inside the country and external groups such as the Afghan Taliban. The government’s swift response in banning drones nationwide reflects a proactive approach to countering emerging aerial threats and safeguarding national security. Authorities remain vigilant and continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent any future attempts to exploit drone technology for malicious purposes.
