Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif embarked on a significant two-day official visit to Doha, where he engaged in high-level discussions aimed at reinforcing the longstanding strategic partnership between Pakistan and Qatar. Central to these talks was the mutual commitment to expanding defence collaboration, a move that underscores the growing importance both nations place on regional security and stability. The visit brought together top officials from both countries, reflecting the depth and breadth of the bilateral relationship.

During the visit, PM Shehbaz held a pivotal meeting with Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs, Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan bin Ali Al Thani. This meeting was attended by several key Pakistani dignitaries, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Federal Minister for Information, and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, from enhancing defence ties to addressing pressing regional issues such as the evolving situations in Iran and Afghanistan. Both sides emphasized the critical need for dialogue and de-escalation to maintain peace and security in the region.

PM Shehbaz expressed appreciation for Qatar’s proactive diplomatic role in facilitating regional negotiations and efforts aimed at reducing tensions. The two leaders agreed on the importance of resolving conflicts peacefully, in line with the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and international law. The Prime Minister also voiced satisfaction with the ongoing military cooperation between the two countries, highlighting a shared determination to elevate their strategic partnership across multiple sectors including defence, security, political coordination, economic collaboration, and institutional linkages.

On the defence front, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister praised the professionalism and capabilities of Pakistan’s armed forces, reaffirming Qatar’s keen interest in deepening military cooperation. This mutual respect and willingness to collaborate signal a promising future for joint defence initiatives, which could include training exchanges, joint exercises, and technology sharing, further solidifying the security framework between the two nations.

In addition to defence matters, economic cooperation featured prominently during the visit. Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Sayed, met with PM Shehbaz to discuss ways to enhance bilateral trade and economic ties. The conversation focused on increasing trade volumes and diversifying Pakistan’s exports to Qatar, with particular attention to agricultural products and value-added goods. Both sides recognized the potential for expanding Qatari investment in Pakistan, which could spur economic growth and create new opportunities for private sector engagement.

The meeting also reaffirmed the commitment to implement decisions made during the 6th Session of the Pakistan-Qatar Joint Ministerial Commission, a key platform for advancing cooperation. PM Shehbaz highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing reforms aimed at creating a more investment-friendly environment, including the role of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) in streamlining procedures for foreign investors. Dr. Al-Sayed, who chairs the Pak-Qatar Joint Business Taskforce, echoed Qatar’s enthusiasm for enhancing collaboration between the private sectors of both countries.

Looking ahead, both leaders agreed to convene a task force meeting during the holy month of Ramadan to review and discuss concrete investment proposals. This initiative reflects a shared determination to deepen economic, industrial, and strategic cooperation, paving the way for stronger bilateral ties that benefit both nations. The visit thus marks a significant step forward in Pakistan-Qatar relations, highlighting a comprehensive approach to partnership that spans defence, diplomacy, and economic development.
