Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a vice chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), fell inside his barrack at Kot Lakhpat Jail after suddenly becoming lightheaded, according to his lawyer, Barrister Taimoor Malik. Qureshi is currently held at the jail.

Qureshi remains in custody because of multiple cases registered after the May 9, 2023 incidents, even though he has secured acquittals or bail in several of them. Those incidents followed the arrest of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, and protests that followed saw attacks on military and government installations.

Knee and arm injuries prompt medical tests

Malik said Qureshi injured his knee and arm in the fall. He added that jail authorities had taken his blood samples and sent them to Shaukat Khanum Hospital for examination.

The lawyer said an application would be filed seeking a CT scan and further treatment for the PTI leader, acting on the advice of Dr Yasmin Rashid.

Pending bail applications keep Qureshi behind bars

Qureshi faces several cases linked to attacks on military and government installations, including the Jinnah House and Askari Tower attack cases in Lahore. According to Malik, he has been acquitted or granted bail in around 50 cases registered in Punjab and Islamabad, but post-arrest bail applications in two cases are still awaiting decisions.

In January 2024, Qureshi was sentenced to 10 years in prison along with Imran Khan in the cipher case, but the Islamabad High Court overturned that conviction in June 2024. His continued detention is linked to other pending cases and bail proceedings, not the cipher case.

In June 2026, an anti-terrorism court acquitted him in a May 9 case concerning the burning of police vehicles in Lahore. As of November 3, 2026, he remained behind bars, and the same court had extended his interim bail until November 6 in other May 9 cases, including the Jinnah House and Askari Tower attack cases.
