Sahiwal District Declares Public Holiday on April 1 for Urs Festival

The district administration of Sahiwal has declared a local public holiday on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, in observance of the annual Urs of the revered Sufi saint Baba Muhammad Panah. This announcement was made through an official notification issued by the Deputy Commissioner of Sahiwal, Captain (retd) Samiullah Farooq. The holiday will be observed throughout all revenue limits within the district to allow residents to participate fully in the spiritual and cultural festivities associated with the Urs.

In a significant clarification, the notification emphasized that this holiday will not affect the education department’s examination schedule. All exams planned for that day will proceed as scheduled, and staff members assigned to special duties related to the exams are expected to continue their responsibilities without interruption. This measure ensures that academic activities maintain continuity despite the local holiday.

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that earlier in the week, the Punjab government had declared a local holiday in Lahore on March 28, 2026, to commemorate the annual Urs of another prominent Sufi saint, Shah Hussain, also known as Madho Lal. This event, popularly celebrated as the Mela ‘Chiraghan festival,’ led to a holiday specifically for district-level offices and their subordinate institutions in Lahore. Such observances highlight the cultural importance of Sufi traditions in the region and the government’s recognition of these events through official holidays.

These local holidays reflect the ongoing respect and reverence for Sufi saints in Punjab, where Urs festivals serve as significant religious and social gatherings. They provide an opportunity for communities to come together in celebration, prayer, and remembrance, reinforcing cultural heritage and spiritual values across the districts.
