Moya Brennan, renowned as one of the most distinctive voices in Celtic music and the lead singer of the Irish folk band Clannad, has died at the age of 73. She passed away peacefully at her home in Donegal, surrounded by family. In recent years, Brennan had been contending with pulmonary fibrosis, which had raised the possibility of a double lung transplant.

Born Máire Philomena Ní Bhraonáin in Dublin on August 4, 1952, she was the eldest of nine siblings. Raised in a musical household, she received formal training at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. In 1970, she co-founded Clannad with her brothers Pól and Ciarán, along with their uncles Noel and Pádraig Ó Dugáin.

The group gained widespread recognition in 1983 with the release of their album Magical Ring, featuring the hit single “Theme from Harry’s Game.” The song reached the UK Top 5 and introduced Irish-language music to a global audience. This success opened doors to significant television and film projects, including composing the score for the series Robin of Sherwood.

Clannad became one of Ireland’s most influential musical families, a legacy further enhanced by Brennan’s sister, Eithne Ní Bhraonáin, who rose to international stardom as Enya. Throughout her career, Brennan collaborated with notable artists such as Bruce Hornsby, Ronan Keating, Robert Plant, Shane MacGowan, and Bono from U2.

She embarked on a solo career in 1992 with the album Máire and continued to perform and compose for many years. Her music has been featured in numerous international film and television soundtracks. Beyond her artistic contributions, Brennan was actively involved in charitable work, supporting organizations aiding people with disabilities and those recovering from addiction.

Open about the difficulties she faced, Brennan often credited her Christian faith with helping her endure illness and personal challenges. She adopted the professional name Moya Brennan in 2002, which she later made official. She is survived by her husband, British photojournalist Tim Jarvis, and their two children.
