Meryl Streep Revisits Iconic Cerulean Look Ahead of ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

Meryl Streep delighted fans with a nostalgic fashion callback while promoting the eagerly awaited sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. On Wednesday, April 1, the Oscar-winning actress appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert wearing a cerulean blue sweater, instantly evoking memories of her character Miranda Priestly’s famous speech about the “not just blue – cerulean” sweater.

This subtle homage to the original film thrilled longtime viewers, recalling the unforgettable scene where Priestly, Streep’s authoritative character, instructs Anne Hathaway’s Andrea Sachs on the intricacies of high fashion. Notably, the choice of cerulean also aligned with a recent Instagram post featuring Hathaway herself in a cerulean-themed hoodie, signaling the color’s renewed prominence ahead of the sequel’s release.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 1, heightening excitement for the follow-up to the 2006 classic. During her interview, Streep reflected on the original film’s initial reception, revealing it was often dismissed as a “chick-flick,” which impacted its budget allocation.

“That label has not aged well,” Streep remarked, highlighting how recent successes like Barbie and Mamma Mia! have shifted studio attitudes toward female-led narratives. “After those films, studios recognize audiences want stories centered on women. Back then, securing our budget was a challenge.”
