Rohingya Refugees Protest in Cox’s Bazar Amid Aid Cuts and Evictions

Nearly a decade after the brutal genocide that forced hundreds of thousands of Rohingya to flee Myanmar, refugees in Cox’s Bazar are staging protests in response to drastic cuts in humanitarian aid. The sprawling camps in Bangladesh, which host the majority of the displaced Rohingya population, have seen significant reductions in essential services, exacerbating already dire living conditions. These aid cuts come at a time when the refugees remain stateless and vulnerable, with limited prospects for repatriation or resettlement.

Meanwhile, Rohingya communities in Malaysia and India are facing forced evictions, adding to the growing crisis of displacement across South and Southeast Asia. These evictions not only strip refugees of their temporary shelters but also heighten their risk of homelessness and exploitation. The regional response to the Rohingya crisis remains fragmented, with host countries struggling to balance humanitarian obligations and domestic pressures.

In a significant development, the protests highlight the ongoing plight of the Rohingya, underscoring the urgent need for sustained international support and durable solutions. The situation in Cox’s Bazar serves as a stark reminder that the consequences of the 2017 genocide continue to reverberate, demanding coordinated global action to protect the rights and dignity of this persecuted minority. Without renewed commitment, the Rohingya risk being trapped in a protracted humanitarian emergency with limited hope for resolution.
