Police in Karachi have detained several workers for questioning over the killing of an elderly couple whose bodies were discovered inside their home in the Sir Syed area of North Karachi.
Police sources said a carpenter, a plumber and a painter had been working at the house. The plumber had finished his job, while the carpenter and the painter were still working there when the case came to light.
Statements recorded and CCTV footage reviewed
Investigators have recorded the statements of the detained workers as part of the probe. Statements from the victims’ close relatives and neighbours have also been taken, and CCTV footage from the area has been obtained.
Police said the footage showing people entering and leaving the house is unclear. A mobile phone recovered from the house has been sent for forensic examination, and police are seeking details from family members arriving from Canada. According to police, the couple’s children are expected in Karachi by tomorrow.
Post-mortem reveals severe head injuries
Post-mortem reports have revealed severe head injuries to both victims. According to the police surgeon, Muhammad Yamin, aged between 65 and 70, and his wife, Nafis Akhtar, aged between 60 and 65, were found dead inside the house.
Investigators suspect the couple were killed with a heavy, blunt object. Samples taken during the post-mortems will undergo chemical analysis to determine whether either victim was given poison or an intoxicating substance before the killings.
Police said they are continuing the investigation into the double murder. The statements of the detained workers and the forensic findings are expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
