Iran FM Affirms Supreme Leader’s Absolute Control Over State Affairs

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared on Friday that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei holds complete authority over the country’s state affairs, aiming to convey a message of stability following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei earlier this year.

In a detailed interview with a Lebanese television channel, Araghchi recounted the tense moments during a series of military strikes on February 28. He revealed that the late Supreme Leader had refused to relocate to a secure bunker despite the imminent threat to his life.

“We will always remember the profound sorrow caused by the martyrdom of the former Supreme Leader,” Araghchi remarked, using a term signifying great respect. He added, “During the attacks on February 28, I was present in the Supreme Leader’s office. Our primary concern was his safety rather than our own. Even though he was urged multiple times to move to a safer location, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei chose to remain.”

Addressing questions about Iran’s leadership transition, Araghchi stressed that the new Supreme Leader’s authority is firmly established and functioning without disruption. He noted that he stays in constant communication with the current Supreme Leader, whose orders are promptly conveyed to government officials and military commanders.

On the regional front, Araghchi reiterated Tehran’s stance against escalating conflicts, emphasizing that Iran does not desire a wider war. However, he warned that any new acts of aggression would be met with a “decisive response.” He also highlighted the necessity for any ceasefire agreements to be comprehensive, covering all conflict zones simultaneously.

Araghchi sharply criticized the United States’ military presence in the Middle East, asserting that American bases in neighboring countries contribute to instability rather than security. “Had these US military installations not existed, such attacks would not have taken place,” he said. “Instead of safeguarding Gulf states, the US has exposed them to insecurity.”

He further disclosed that Iran issued a clear diplomatic warning to Gulf Cooperation Council nations during the crisis, stating that any foreign military bases used to launch strikes against Iran would be considered legitimate targets.

Concluding his remarks, Araghchi stated, “The US president and the Israeli prime minister have gravely underestimated Iran’s resilience and strength.”
