Indian PM Modi Holds Talks with Myanmar Military Leader Amid Criticism

In a significant development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Myanmar’s military leader Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi. This meeting comes amid ongoing political turmoil in Myanmar following the military coup in February 2021. The engagement marks a notable diplomatic effort by India to maintain dialogue with Myanmar’s ruling authorities despite widespread international condemnation of the military regime.

Meanwhile, Myanmar’s opposition groups have strongly criticized India for hosting Min Aung Hlaing, accusing New Delhi of legitimizing the military government responsible for suppressing democratic forces. These groups argue that such meetings undermine efforts to restore civilian rule and human rights in Myanmar. However, India maintains that continued engagement is the most pragmatic approach to influence positive change and ensure regional stability.

Notably, India’s strategic interests in Myanmar include security concerns along their shared border and economic projects such as the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway. By keeping communication channels open, India aims to balance its geopolitical priorities with the complex realities of Myanmar’s internal conflict. This diplomatic stance highlights the challenges faced by regional powers in addressing governance crises while safeguarding their national interests.
