Punjab Government Revamps Crime Control Department into Advanced Investigation Agency

In a significant move aimed at strengthening law enforcement and enhancing public confidence, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has sanctioned a comprehensive transformation of the Crime Control Department (CCD). This initiative will see the CCD evolve into a Premier Investigation Agency (PIA), designed to serve as the province’s foremost body for tackling crime with cutting-edge technology and modern investigative techniques.

The government has outlined plans to broaden the CCD’s responsibilities substantially, drawing inspiration from the operational frameworks of the world’s leading crime control organizations. This expansion is expected to equip the department with a wide array of sophisticated forensic instruments, artificial intelligence-driven software, and advanced intelligence surveillance systems. These upgrades will collectively position the agency as the most technologically advanced law enforcement entity within Pakistan, setting new standards for crime detection and prevention.

Alongside technological enhancements, the Chief Minister has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art headquarters for the CCD. This central facility will serve as the nerve center for operations, research, and coordination. Moreover, the government plans to establish fully functional offices, police stations, and residential accommodations for officers at every administrative level, including divisions, districts, and tehsils throughout Punjab. This decentralized approach aims to ensure rapid response times and effective crime management across the entire province.

To further empower law enforcement personnel, officers will be provided with the latest monitoring and tracking tools. These resources will enable them to pursue criminals more efficiently and maintain continuous surveillance to prevent criminal activities. In addition to these measures, a focused campaign targeting the illegal possession and use of firearms is scheduled to commence after Eid-ul-Fitr. This initiative builds on previous efforts that have already contributed to a noticeable decline in various types of crime.

Recent statistics from the government reveal encouraging trends, with significant reductions in murders and crimes against women. Other categories of crime, including robberies, mobile and bag snatching, vehicle thefts, attempted murders, and kidnappings for ransom, have also experienced sharp decreases compared to the previous year. These positive developments underscore the effectiveness of ongoing law enforcement strategies and the urgent need to further strengthen the CCD’s capabilities.

In parallel with operational reforms, new legislation aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal weapons is underway. The CCD has been assigned a critical role in addressing heinous offenses such as acid attacks and other violent crimes targeting women, highlighting the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable segments of society. Furthermore, plans are in place to establish a modern crime research center within the agency. This center will support investigative work by analyzing crime patterns and developing innovative strategies to reduce criminal activities across Punjab.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized that these comprehensive reforms are designed not only to modernize the province’s law enforcement framework but also to significantly improve public safety. She expressed confidence that the upgraded Premier Investigation Agency will set new benchmarks in crime control and investigative excellence, ultimately fostering a safer environment for all citizens of Punjab.
