PCB Overhauls Selection Committee Following Underwhelming T20 World Cup Performance

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has undertaken a significant restructuring of its national men’s cricket team selection committee in the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing showing at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. This move aims to address the shortcomings revealed during the tournament and to pave the way for a stronger, more competitive side in future international fixtures.

In a strategic shake-up, the PCB has inducted two prominent former captains, Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfaraz Ahmed, into the revamped selection panel. Both have extensive experience leading Pakistan at the highest level and are expected to bring valuable insights and leadership to the selection process. Their inclusion signals the board’s intent to leverage seasoned cricketing minds to guide team composition and player development.

Alongside these new appointments, the PCB has chosen to retain the services of former Test cricketers Aaqib Javed and Asad Shafiq, who continue to serve as members of the committee. Their ongoing involvement ensures continuity and a blend of fresh perspectives with established expertise, which the board hopes will result in more balanced and effective team selections.

Adding further weight to the changes, Sarfaraz Ahmed has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of head coach for Pakistan’s Test team. This dual role underscores the board’s confidence in his leadership abilities and cricketing acumen, as they look to strengthen Pakistan’s performance in the longer format of the game as well.

The timing of these adjustments follows closely on the heels of former international umpire Aleem Dar’s recent resignation from the selection committee, which was announced just two days prior. His departure marked the end of an era and opened the door for the PCB to reconfigure the panel in a manner that aligns with their renewed vision for Pakistan cricket.

Pakistan’s lackluster campaign in the T20 World Cup 2026 served as the catalyst for this overhaul. The team’s failure to make a significant impact in the tournament drew sharp criticism from cricket enthusiasts, analysts, and former players alike. Calls for comprehensive reforms in team management and selection strategies grew louder, prompting the PCB to respond decisively.

With the new committee in place, the PCB is placing its hopes on a more systematic and strategic approach to player selection and squad rebuilding. The board aims to restore consistency and competitiveness to Pakistan’s cricket teams across all formats, especially as the country prepares for a packed international calendar ahead. The emphasis will be on nurturing talent, fostering team cohesion, and ensuring that Pakistan remains a formidable force on the global stage.

As the cricketing fraternity watches closely, the revamped selection committee faces the critical task of steering Pakistan cricket out of its current slump. The board’s decision to bring in experienced former leaders reflects a broader commitment to learning from past mistakes and charting a course toward sustained success in international cricket.
