Transport Services Resume at European Athletics Championships After Security Incident

Transport operations at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium returned to normal early Sunday following a significant security intervention that caused disruptions on Saturday evening. Several athletes, including Britain’s Amy Hunt, along with thousands of spectators, were reportedly unable to exit the venue for over an hour due to an incident involving armed police.

In a notable development, a man was arrested on suspicion of fraud during the incident. Despite the disruption, services resumed smoothly by Sunday morning, allowing attendees to leave the stadium without further issues.

Organisers emphasized that the safety and wellbeing of spectators, athletes, staff, and the broader Championships community remain their top priority. They acknowledged the challenges posed by the delays and expressed gratitude for the patience and cooperation shown by everyone affected throughout the evening.

The statement did not elaborate on the specifics of the incident or the extent of the security measures taken. On Saturday, the stadium was near its full capacity of 23,000 for the evening session, which saw Britain secure gold medals in both the men’s and women’s 4×100 metres relay events.

Following the incident, six medal ceremonies scheduled after the final event were cancelled. The championships also issued an apology for the significant delays experienced by spectators when leaving the venue, noting that bus and coach departures would gradually resume.

Amy Hunt and her teammates are set to compete in Sunday’s mixed sprint relay, where Hunt aims to claim a record fourth gold medal at the championships.
