Meta-owned WhatsApp is working on a fresh chat bar for its Android app and is trying out two alternative arrangements meant to give the app a more contemporary appearance. The changes were spotted in beta version 2.26.41.11, according to WABetaInfo. The feature is still in development and is expected to reach beta testers soon.
The update involves two main shifts on the conversation screen. The text entry box would sit at the top of the bar, above the emoji keyboard button, while the send button would be folded into the bar instead of standing apart as its own element.
Two layouts under test for the chat bar
In the first option, the emoji button stays on the right-hand side. The attachment and camera buttons sit on the left, beside the send button.
The second option is more streamlined. It places the attachment and camera buttons together on the left, with the send button on the right. Both versions keep the core changes and differ only in how the controls are arranged.
Next steps and timing for Android users
The redesign follows WhatsApp’s continuing work on its Android interface, including recent updates to the bottom navigation bar. The company has not yet confirmed which chat bar design it will adopt, or when it will arrive.
For now, Android users will have to wait for WhatsApp to enable the new chat bar in a future update.
