Laiba Ejaz Fraud Case: Suspect Also Cheated Nine Others

A fraudster named Noman, whose scam led to the death of gold-medalist student Laiba Ejaz, also defrauded at least nine other people, sources said. According to the sources, Noman took money from victims by promising them jobs, and none of them had previously filed a complaint with any forum.

Islamabad Police have traced some of the victims after finding that the suspect had issued fake job offer letters to nine people. The suspect fled after taking hundreds of thousands of rupees, and victims are now contacting the police.

Scholarship promise led to family’s savings loss

Sources said Noman had earlier cheated Laiba under the guise of securing her admission to a US university. Her maternal uncle said she dreamed of studying in the United States and becoming a scientist, and approached a consultancy in Islamabad’s Blue Area, where Noman offered to arrange a scholarship.

The family was told it would pay 20 percent of the costs, while the university would cover the remaining 80 percent. After submitting documents, they were informed the scholarship had been approved. The uncle said the consultant learned the family had savings of around Rs1.2 to 1.3 million and persuaded them to hand over the money.

Family sold land after bank statement demand

The family was later told that a bank statement was also required under new rules, the uncle said. They sold a plot of land and transferred Rs4 million to the consultant’s account.

Her maternal uncle said Laiba later died by suicide in Islamabad after being defrauded by the education consultant.
