Neymar Retires from Brazil After Heartbreaking World Cup Exit

Neymar concluded his illustrious international career on Sunday, announcing his retirement from the Brazil national team shortly after the five-time world champions were surprisingly eliminated by Norway in the World Cup round of 16 with a 2-1 defeat.

The 34-year-old forward, Brazil’s all-time top goalscorer, fought back tears as he confirmed that the match would be his final appearance for the Selecao, ending a 16-year journey that established him as one of the country’s greatest football icons.

Despite scoring Brazil’s lone goal from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time, Neymar’s effort was insufficient to overturn Erling Haaland’s second-half brace, which secured a historic victory for Norway and marked Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990.

In a poignant post-match reflection, an emotional Neymar said, “I tried. I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium, and I finished here. It is now over.” His farewell took place on the very ground where some of the most memorable moments of his international career had occurred, adding to the significance of the occasion.

Spanning from 2010 to 2024, Neymar’s Brazil tenure included 130 international caps and a record 80 goals, surpassing the legendary Pele to become the nation’s leading scorer. Additionally, he contributed 59 assists, cementing his role as a key creative force.

Although a World Cup title eluded him, Neymar was the centerpiece of Brazil’s attack for over a decade, proudly wearing the iconic No. 10 jersey and helping to define a modern era of Brazilian football. He retires as the second-most capped player in Brazil’s history and one of its most influential stars.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s exit ushers in a new phase under coach Carlo Ancelotti, whose contract was recently extended through 2030. The Italian manager now faces the challenge of rebuilding the squad without the player who had long been its creative heartbeat and attacking leader.

Despite the heartbreak of another World Cup disappointment, Neymar leaves the international stage with a lasting legacy shaped by his record-breaking achievements, longevity, and profound impact on one of football’s most successful national teams.
