The federal government has implemented a significant reshuffle within the senior police leadership, transferring Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi from his role as Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) and appointing Captain (retired) Muhammad Sohail Chaudhry as the new chief of police for the capital.

Notifications released by the Establishment Division confirm that Rizvi has been reassigned as the director general of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), Pakistan’s specialized unit responsible for tackling cybercrime, including online fraud, harassment, data breaches, and digital forensic investigations. This transition underscores the growing focus on cybercrime within the country’s law enforcement framework.

Captain Sohail Chaudhry, a Grade 20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan, previously served under the Punjab government and brings a wealth of experience in field policing. His career includes key roles such as Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, City Police Officer (CPO) Faisalabad, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Lahore, DIG Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) Punjab, and Regional Police Officer (RPO) Multan. These positions have equipped him with extensive expertise in managing operational, traffic, and counter-terrorism activities at both city and regional levels.

Meanwhile, Grade 21 officer Khurram Ali has been appointed director general of the National Police Bureau (NPB), an institution that functions as the federal body for police policy formulation, coordination, and professional development across Pakistan. His appointment brings new leadership to another vital federal law enforcement agency.

Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi had held the post of Islamabad police chief since April 2024, overseeing security, policing, and law-and-order operations in the federal capital. During his tenure, Islamabad Police faced various public order and security challenges, while making strides in adopting advanced technology and command-and-control systems. He also chaired several meetings focusing on security, traffic management, and operational readiness in Islamabad.

These appointments mark a strategic reorganization of leadership across three key federal law enforcement institutions: Islamabad Police, the NCCIA, and the National Police Bureau, aiming to strengthen operational efficiency and address emerging challenges in security and cybercrime.
