Islamabad witnessed a significant diplomatic engagement as Pakistan and Iran agreed to deepen institutional collaboration after a meeting between Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
On Wednesday, the Iranian delegation, headed by Minister Momeni, visited the ECP headquarters where Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja warmly received the guests. The meeting was also attended by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry.
The ECP Secretariat provided the Iranian delegation with a detailed briefing on Pakistan’s electoral framework, highlighting the commission’s constitutional and legal responsibilities. Commissioner Sikandar Raja emphasized the enduring historical, religious, and cultural bonds linking the two nations, noting that sharing electoral experiences would further solidify their institutional relationship.
Minister Momeni acknowledged Pakistan’s steadfast support during challenging periods and reiterated that the bilateral relationship is grounded in historic, religious, and fraternal connections. Additionally, the Iranian minister was briefed on the procedures for appointing election personnel and the mechanisms in place for resolving electoral grievances.
Notably, the Iranian delegation arrived in Islamabad on Monday amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. This visit occurred against the backdrop of recent confrontations between the US and Iran, involving reciprocal strikes targeting military assets in the region, which have heightened regional instability.
In a significant development, this diplomatic exchange underscores both countries’ commitment to strengthening cooperation despite the prevailing geopolitical challenges in their neighborhood.
