Punjab Requests Army and Rangers Deployment for Muharram Security 2026

The Punjab Home Department has formally requested the Ministry of Interior to deploy personnel from the Pakistan Army and Pakistan Rangers throughout the province to bolster security arrangements for Muharram-ul-Haram 2026. This move follows a recommendation from the Punjab Police, which highlighted the need for additional security support during the sacred month.

In total, the department has sought the deployment of 137 companies across 39 districts, comprising 61 companies from the Pakistan Army and 76 from the Pakistan Rangers Punjab. The request aims to strengthen law enforcement efforts and maintain order during Muharram processions and gatherings.

A letter addressed to the Interior Ministry emphasizes that the current security situation demands a comprehensive and foolproof mechanism to counter potential threats from terrorists and other disruptive elements during Muharram. It states, “The prevailing security environment necessitates a robust security mechanism for Muharram-ul-Haram 2026 to thwart designs of terrorism and miscreants.” The Home Department has urged the federal government to act on the requisition in line with the requirements submitted by the Provincial Police Officer and the Inspector General of Punjab Police.

The document details district-wise deployment needs, including significant requests for Army and Rangers companies in key districts such as Lahore, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Attock, and Sargodha, among others. These deployments are intended to provide effective security coverage and assist civil law enforcement agencies during the religious events.

Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam, with Ashura, the 10th day, commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his family at the Battle of Karbala. Across Pakistan, faithful observe Muharram through processions and majalis, where religious scholars address large crowds. These events are held under strict security measures, with thousands of law enforcement personnel deployed to ensure public safety.
