SHC Reinstates State Bank Employee Dismissed Due to Rare Heart Condition

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has ordered the reinstatement of an employee from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) who was previously dismissed on grounds related to a rare heart condition. This decision underscores the judiciary’s role in protecting the rights of workers facing health challenges. The employee’s dismissal had raised concerns about discrimination against individuals with medical conditions in public sector employment.

In a significant development, the SHC emphasized that medical ailments, especially rare ones, should not be a basis for termination without proper consideration of the employee’s rights and capabilities. The ruling serves as a precedent for similar cases where health issues intersect with employment law. It also reflects the growing awareness and sensitivity towards accommodating employees with disabilities or chronic illnesses in Pakistan’s workforce.

Meanwhile, this judgment could prompt public institutions to revisit their human resource policies to ensure compliance with legal standards and human rights principles. It highlights the importance of balancing organizational requirements with compassionate treatment of employees facing health adversities. The case may inspire further legal scrutiny and reforms aimed at safeguarding the employment rights of vulnerable workers nationwide.
