Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a significant meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing on Monday during his official visit to China, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation and economic relations between the two countries.

Upon his arrival at the Great Hall of the People, the prime minister was warmly welcomed by Premier Li and presented with a guard of honour, which he inspected alongside the Chinese leader. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir accompanied PM Sharif throughout the visit.

The prime minister also participated in a reception hosted by the Chinese leadership in his honour. During delegation-level talks, both leaders explored ways to deepen collaboration across various sectors. They jointly attended a ceremony for exchanging memorandums of understanding and agreements aimed at strengthening Pakistan-China ties.

Addressing the talks, PM Sharif expressed gratitude for the cordial invitation to visit China, highlighting the remarkable development and transformation he observed in the country with each visit. He emphasized the enduring friendship between Pakistan and China, noting that both nations have consistently supported each other during challenging times.

Marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Sharif congratulated China and underscored its steadfast support for Pakistan during crises. He also reflected on the global challenges currently faced and expressed hope for lasting peace worldwide.

PM Sharif extended thanks to Chinese President Xi Jinping for his backing of Pakistan’s efforts toward a ceasefire and voiced Islamabad’s endorsement of Xi’s four-point peace agenda. He acknowledged ongoing regional tensions, particularly in the Gulf, and highlighted the pivotal role played by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir in facilitating dialogue between Iran and the United States. The prime minister noted significant progress in these peace-building efforts, with developments moving in a positive direction.

Sharif praised Field Marshal Munir’s commitment, mentioning that despite a demanding schedule and recent return from Tehran, the Field Marshal made the overnight trip to China to participate in the meetings, reflecting his active engagement in regional diplomacy.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang commended Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability. He affirmed Beijing’s readiness to engage in discussions with Islamabad on shared interests.

Accompanying the prime minister on this visit are Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, and other senior officials.

During his stay, PM Sharif is set to lay a wreath at the Monument to the People’s Heroes in Tiananmen Square and meet with leading Chinese investors and CEOs of major companies. He will also participate in a ceremony commemorating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and China alongside senior Chinese leaders.
