Government Revises Passport Office Hours Nationwide to Support Fuel Conservation

ISLAMABAD: In a move aimed at supporting the government’s broader austerity and fuel conservation strategies, the operational hours of passport offices throughout Pakistan have been officially adjusted. This change reflects a nationwide effort to reduce energy consumption and streamline public services amid ongoing economic challenges. The Department of Immigration and Passports has introduced a revised working schedule that will now see passport offices functioning only four days a week.

The newly implemented timetable specifies that all passport offices will remain open from Monday through Thursday, while they will be closed on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This adjustment marks a significant shift from the traditional five or six-day workweek previously observed by these government entities. The decision was formalized through an official circular, which was authorized by the Director General of Immigration and Passports, underscoring the government’s commitment to enforcing fuel-saving policies across all departments.

It is important to note that despite this reduction in working days, certain passport facilities will maintain their usual operations. Specifically, regional passport offices that provide round-the-clock services will continue to operate 24/7 without interruption. This exception ensures that urgent and critical passport-related services remain accessible to the public at all times. Furthermore, the Swift Service Centres, which handle expedited passport processing, will retain their existing shift systems to guarantee uninterrupted service delivery and meet the demands of citizens requiring faster processing.

This restructuring of office hours comes as part of a larger government initiative to curb unnecessary fuel consumption amid rising energy costs and economic pressures. By limiting the number of days passport offices are open, the government aims to reduce electricity and fuel usage associated with daily operations, including transportation for staff and facility maintenance. Such measures are expected to contribute to the national goal of energy conservation while maintaining essential public services.

Citizens are advised to plan their visits to passport offices in accordance with the new schedule to avoid inconvenience. The Department of Immigration and Passports has also encouraged the use of online services and appointment bookings where possible, to further streamline processes and reduce physical footfall at office locations. This transition reflects a broader trend of digitalization within government services, aimed at enhancing efficiency while adapting to current economic realities.
