Iranian Military Confirms Over 100 Dead in US Submarine Attack Near Sri Lanka Coast

The Iranian military announced on Sunday that a recent assault by a United States submarine resulted in the deaths of at least 104 personnel and left 32 others wounded. The attack targeted the Iranian frigate Dena, which was operating in the Indian Ocean approximately 19 nautical miles off the southern port city of Galle in Sri Lanka. This incident occurred last Wednesday and has significantly escalated tensions between Washington and Tehran, marking a notable expansion of US military actions against the Iranian naval forces.

The sinking of the Dena frigate represents a serious blow to Iran’s naval capabilities in the strategically vital waters near South Asia. The attack not only caused a tragic loss of life but also sent shockwaves through the region, highlighting the fragile security environment in the Indian Ocean. The US submarine’s operation against the Iranian warship underscores the increasing assertiveness of American military presence in these waters, which are crucial for international shipping lanes and regional geopolitics.

Meanwhile, developments within Iran’s political landscape have added further complexity to the situation. On Saturday, a member of Iran’s Assembly of Experts, Hossein Mozafari, announced that the assembly is scheduled to convene within the next 24 hours to select the nation’s next supreme leader. This announcement came shortly after reports emerged about the death of the current supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was allegedly killed in a joint US-Israeli operation. Mozafari, one of the 88 members of the assembly, emphasized the importance of divine guidance in the upcoming session and urged the public to avoid speculation and rumors until the assembly formally meets.

The Assembly of Experts plays a critical role in Iran’s political system, as it is responsible for appointing and overseeing the supreme leader, who holds the highest authority in the country. The potential leadership transition amid such a volatile military confrontation adds a layer of uncertainty to Iran’s domestic and foreign policy directions. Observers are closely watching how this leadership change might influence Iran’s response to the US attack and its broader regional strategy.

In summary, the recent US submarine strike on the Iranian frigate Dena near Sri Lanka has resulted in significant casualties and heightened tensions between the two nations. At the same time, Iran faces a pivotal moment in its political hierarchy with the imminent selection of a new supreme leader. These intertwined military and political developments are likely to have far-reaching implications for stability in the Middle East and the Indian Ocean region.
