Punjab Issues Notifications for Delimitation and Formation of 439 Local Government Bodies

The Punjab government has officially issued notifications concerning the delimitation and establishment of 439 local government institutions across the province. This move represents a substantial increase in the number of local bodies, reflecting efforts to enhance grassroots governance and administrative efficiency in Punjab.

Previously, under the Punjab Local Government Act of 2013, the province was home to 229 local government entities, which included 182 municipal committees and 11 municipal corporations. The latest notifications nearly double this figure, signaling a major restructuring aimed at improving local representation and service delivery. This expansion is expected to bring government closer to the people by creating more accessible and responsive administrative units.

The issued notifications provide comprehensive details about the new local government institutions, including their official names, geographic boundaries, and administrative status. These details have been formally shared with the Election Commission of Pakistan to facilitate the upcoming electoral processes and ensure transparency in the formation of these bodies.

Following the issuance of these notifications, the government will address any objections raised and complete all necessary legal formalities. Once these steps are finalized, a gazette notification will be published, marking the official commencement of the new local government framework. This gazette notification is a critical milestone that will trigger the formal establishment of these institutions.

Subsequent to the gazette notification, the government will initiate the transfer of powers, responsibilities, and assets to the newly formed local bodies. This phase will also involve taking practical steps to make these institutions fully operational, ensuring they are equipped to serve their respective communities effectively. The overall process underscores the provincial government’s commitment to decentralization and strengthening local governance structures across Punjab.
