Sarah J. Maas Clarifies Status of ACOTAR TV Adaptation Amid Creative Control Shift

Sarah J. Maas, the acclaimed author behind the bestselling fantasy series A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR), has recently addressed the future of the highly anticipated television adaptation of her work. During a candid conversation on Alex Cooper’s popular podcast Call Her Daddy on March 4, Maas revealed that the project is currently paused as she prioritizes returning to her writing. This update comes amid growing curiosity and speculation among fans eager to see the richly imagined world of ACOTAR brought to the screen.

Maas explained that her immediate focus is on completing new installments in the book series, emphasizing that it has been some time since readers received fresh content. She expressed a deep commitment to her literary work, stating, “Right now, my focus is on books. It’s been a little while since you guys have had something, so I’m focusing on that.” This shift in attention underscores her dedication to expanding the story in its original form before moving forward with any screen adaptations.

Delving deeper into the reasons behind the delay, Maas highlighted the importance of creative control as a key factor. Recently, she regained the rights to her novels, a development that grants her greater authority over how the ACOTAR universe is translated into other media. This regained control allows her to oversee the adaptation process closely, ensuring the story remains faithful to her vision and the expectations of her devoted fanbase.

“Any TV or movie adaptation is just another way to explore the worlds I’ve created,” Maas shared. “It’s crucial for me to be involved and to learn as much as I can about the process.” She emphasized that preserving the integrity of the narrative is paramount, rejecting the idea of altering the story merely to cater to specific demographics. “I want to see everything adapted the way I envision it, and the way I know fans want it,” she said. “I don’t ever want to hear, ‘Oh, we need to change this to appeal to XYZ demographic.’ That’s not how you make art.” This stance reflects Maas’s commitment to authenticity and respect for her original work.

The ACOTAR television adaptation was initially announced in 2021, with streaming giant Hulu revealing plans to develop the fantasy series. Ronald D. Moore, known for his work on Outlander, was attached as writer and executive producer, generating significant excitement among fans. However, the project’s momentum was disrupted when Moore confirmed in 2024 that he had stepped away after leaving Disney and returning to Sony. His departure left the future of the show uncertain, casting doubt on when or if the adaptation would move forward.

Despite these setbacks, Maas reassured fans that the story is far from over. She recently confirmed that the sixth book in the ACOTAR series is slated for release later this year, promising new adventures and developments within the beloved fantasy world. While the television adaptation remains on hold for now, Maas’s ongoing literary work continues to captivate readers worldwide.

In summary, although the ACOTAR TV series faces delays and creative restructuring, Sarah J. Maas remains determined to protect the essence of her creation. By focusing on her writing and maintaining control over adaptations, she aims to deliver a faithful and compelling portrayal of her fantasy realm, whether on the page or screen. Fans can look forward to more books soon, while the possibility of a future TV adaptation remains alive but carefully managed.
