Val Chmerkovskiy Opens Up About Health Scare During ‘DWTS’ Tour and Diagnosis

Val Chmerkovskiy, the celebrated professional dancer known for his multiple victories on the popular television competition “Dancing With the Stars,” recently disclosed the medical condition behind a sudden health scare that interrupted his participation in the show’s live tour. The incident, which alarmed many fans, occurred earlier this week when Chmerkovskiy posted a video from a hospital bed in Peoria, Illinois, describing his struggle with intense vertigo symptoms.

In the video, Chmerkovskiy explained that he had been experiencing severe dizziness and balance issues, which prompted immediate medical attention. Following a series of tests, doctors identified the cause as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a relatively common inner ear disorder that leads to sudden bouts of spinning sensations and equilibrium disturbances. This diagnosis brought some relief, as the condition is generally manageable and not life-threatening.

Addressing his 1.5 million Instagram followers, Chmerkovskiy reassured everyone by emphasizing that the diagnosis was not as serious as initially feared. He clarified that there was no brain tumor involved and that the vertigo was unrelated to a previous neck injury he had sustained. “So, I got BPPV, which isn’t too bad, thank God,” he said, highlighting the positive side of the situation despite the discomfort he endured.

The dancer described the sensation as feeling like he was “spinning everywhere,” which understandably made performing impossible at that moment. This sudden onset of vertigo forced him to miss a scheduled performance during the ongoing “Dancing With the Stars” live tour, a traveling show that brings the excitement of the television competition directly to audiences across the United States. Despite this setback, Chmerkovskiy expressed optimism about his recovery and his ability to return to the stage soon.

He further explained that while he was still experiencing some vertigo symptoms, he was feeling significantly better and confident enough to continue performing. BPPV, as noted by medical experts such as those at Johns Hopkins Medicine, is the most frequent cause of vertigo and often arises from disturbances in the inner ear. It can sometimes be triggered by head trauma or other ear-related issues and is typically treated through specialized physical therapy exercises aimed at restoring balance and reducing dizziness.

The “Dancing With the Stars” live tour is an annual event that follows the conclusion of the ABC competition series, featuring fan-favorite professional dancers and standout contestants from the latest season. This year’s tour includes prominent professionals like Emma Slater, Pasha Pashkov, and Daniella Karagach, alongside a rotating cast of top performers from season 34. The franchise itself continues to grow, with ABC recently announcing a new spin-off titled “Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro,” designed to discover fresh talent to join the show’s elite group of professional dancers.

Val Chmerkovskiy has been a key figure in “Dancing With the Stars” since 2011, earning three mirrorball trophies over the years and becoming a beloved personality among fans. His openness about his health challenges not only highlights the physical demands placed on professional dancers but also underscores the importance of addressing medical issues promptly to ensure long-term well-being. As he continues to recover, fans eagerly await his return to the stage, confident that his resilience and dedication will see him through this temporary hurdle.
