PM Shahbaz Sharif Calls Lawmakers for Private Briefing on Regional Security Challenges

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has summoned leaders of parliamentary parties and heads of political factions for a confidential briefing aimed at addressing the evolving security landscape in the region. The announcement was made by the Prime Minister’s adviser, Rana Sanaullah, during a press interaction in Islamabad on Tuesday. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., where key issues concerning both domestic and regional security will be thoroughly examined.

This high-level gathering comes amid rising concerns over Pakistan’s response to provocative actions by the Afghan Taliban along the shared border, as well as the intensifying conflict in the Middle East. Sanaullah emphasized that the invitation was extended on direct instructions from the Prime Minister, underscoring the importance of a unified approach across political divides. He urged opposition leaders to participate with an open mind, setting aside partisan interests to focus on national security priorities.

In preparation for the meeting, opposition figures have been encouraged to consult with their parliamentary colleagues to formulate a collective stance. Sanaullah stressed that the session is not intended for negotiating demands or conditions but rather for fostering a comprehensive dialogue on the challenges Pakistan currently faces. This call for cooperation highlights the government’s desire to build consensus in a time of heightened regional instability.

However, National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai voiced a differing opinion, suggesting that the briefing should be expanded to include the entire parliament rather than a select group of leaders. He argued that the gravity of the regional developments necessitates full parliamentary awareness and involvement. Achakzai indicated that his party would finalize its response by Wednesday morning after internal consultations, reflecting the broader political engagement expected on this critical issue.

The timing of this briefing coincides with escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly following coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel targeting Iran. On February 28, these nations launched a significant assault aimed at crippling Iran’s naval and missile capabilities, marking a serious escalation in regional hostilities. This volatile situation adds another layer of complexity to Pakistan’s security considerations.

Simultaneously, Pakistan continues to grapple with cross-border terrorism emanating from Afghanistan. The Pakistan Armed Forces have intensified their ground and aerial operations under the banner of Operation Ghazab lil-Haq. This campaign targets Afghan Taliban militants and Fitna al-Khawarij insurgents responsible for recent incursions and attacks along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The operation was initiated on February 27 following unprovoked firing by Afghan Taliban forces.

Since the launch of Operation Ghazab lil-Haq, Pakistani security forces have reported significant successes, including the elimination of 464 Afghan Taliban fighters and injuries to over 660 militants. Additionally, 188 Taliban checkposts have been destroyed, while 31 posts have been captured, demonstrating the intensity and effectiveness of the ongoing military efforts to secure the border region.

Adding further clarity on the upcoming meeting, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar confirmed that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif will personally conduct the in-camera briefing for the political leadership. He also noted that Rana Sanaullah has been entrusted with the responsibility of formally inviting the heads of all political parties, ensuring broad representation at this crucial discussion.

As Pakistan navigates these multifaceted security challenges, the Prime Minister’s initiative to engage political leaders in a private, focused dialogue reflects an attempt to consolidate national unity and formulate a coherent strategy. The outcome of this meeting is expected to shape Pakistan’s approach to both internal security threats and the broader geopolitical tensions impacting the region.
