US Embassy in Islamabad Alerts Citizens Amid Rising Protests Over Khamenei Assassination

The United States Embassy in Islamabad has issued a heightened security advisory for American nationals residing in or visiting Pakistan, following widespread protests triggered by the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This alert comes as tensions escalate across several major Pakistani cities, with demonstrators targeting US diplomatic missions in response to the incident.

In its official communication, the embassy highlighted that it is closely tracking reports of ongoing demonstrations outside multiple US diplomatic facilities throughout Pakistan. Notably, protests have been reported at the US Consulates General in Karachi and Lahore, while calls for further demonstrations have emerged targeting the US Embassy in Islamabad and the Consulate General in Peshawar. These developments have prompted US authorities to advise their citizens to remain vigilant and adopt enhanced security measures.

American nationals in Pakistan have been urged to stay informed by following local news outlets carefully and to exercise increased caution in their daily activities. The embassy’s guidance emphasizes the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings at all times, steering clear of large crowds or public gatherings, and ensuring that their registration with the Smart Traveller Enrollment Programme (STEP) is current. This program allows the embassy to provide timely updates and assistance in case of emergencies.

The protests erupted violently across Pakistan on Sunday, sparked by outrage over US and Israeli military actions that resulted in the death of Ayatollah Khamenei. The situation escalated particularly in Karachi, where clashes outside the US Consulate turned deadly, leaving several people dead and dozens more injured. Similar demonstrations took place in Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta, with protesters confronting law enforcement officials. In response, police and security forces resorted to crowd control measures, including the use of tear gas and baton charges, to disperse the crowds and restore order.

Authorities in Islamabad have taken stringent steps to prevent further unrest, including the imposition of Section 144, which prohibits public gatherings in sensitive areas. Additionally, key routes leading to the capital’s Red Zone—home to diplomatic missions and government buildings—have been blocked to restrict access and minimize the risk of violence near these critical locations. These measures reflect the government’s efforts to maintain stability amid a volatile security environment.

As the situation continues to develop, the US Embassy remains vigilant and committed to safeguarding the welfare of its citizens in Pakistan. The embassy’s alert serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of regional tensions and the importance of preparedness for those living abroad. Meanwhile, Pakistani authorities are also navigating the delicate balance between managing public dissent and ensuring the safety of foreign diplomatic missions within their jurisdiction.
