Ebola Cases in Congo Surpass 6,000 Amid Treatment Challenges

The Democratic Republic of Congo has now recorded over 6,000 confirmed Ebola cases, as the government disclosed updated figures on Monday. In response, new treatment facilities have been established in the eastern region to address the escalating outbreak.

In a notable development, the French humanitarian organization Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) inaugurated a new Ebola treatment center in Beni, located in North Kivu province. Since the outbreak began in mid-May, Beni has reported 122 confirmed cases and 87 deaths. North Kivu currently holds the highest case fatality rate among the six affected provinces, standing at 68 percent official data.

Despite these efforts, the response faces significant obstacles, particularly a shortage of hospital beds. Aid workers emphasize that this limitation is a major factor hindering containment. Dr. Wessam Mankoula, head of emergency preparedness and response at Africa CDC, highlighted earlier this month the urgent need for approximately 2,000 additional beds to manage the crisis effectively.

Complicating the situation further, there is no known vaccine or specific treatment available for the Bundibugyo strain responsible for this outbreak. Consequently, health teams rely heavily on traditional containment strategies such as contact tracing and patient isolation to curb transmission.

Albert Stern, MSF’s emergency coordinator, stressed the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, noting that prompt medical intervention significantly improves survival chances and reduces the risk of spreading the virus within families and communities.

Currently, MSF deploys around 1,400 staff members across Congo, operating treatment centers with a combined capacity of 400 beds to support the ongoing response efforts.
