Revolution Medicines’ Pancreatic Cancer Drug Gains Swift FDA Approval

Revolution Medicines has secured rapid approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its innovative pancreatic cancer medication, following a large clinical trial that demonstrated the drug’s ability to double survival rates in patients with advanced disease. This development brings renewed hope to those affected by this aggressive cancer.

The medication, administered as a once-daily pill under the brand name Rasonque, is approved for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer who have either undergone prior treatment or are ineligible for combination chemotherapy. It functions by targeting multiple variants of the RAS protein, a critical driver of tumor growth in many pancreatic cancers.

When the trial results were announced in April, demand surged dramatically. The FDA responded by granting early access through its compassionate use program, which permits patients with serious or life-threatening conditions to receive experimental treatments before formal authorization.

Some patients who received early access to the drug have experienced relief from the harsh side effects of chemotherapy. Barbara Andes, 88, from Fullerton, California, began treatment with Rasonque in July after a year of chemotherapy. She reported that the pill enabled her to return to normal activities with significantly reduced nausea and fatigue. She expressed optimism that FDA approval would extend treatment availability to many more patients.

Brian Wolpin, director of the Hale Family Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, described the approval as a long-awaited and well-deserved advancement for patients and families confronting metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Revolution Medicines, headquartered in Redwood City, California, has not yet provided details on pricing or distribution plans.

In a significant development, this drug was among the first to benefit from the FDA’s new expedited review process introduced last year. This initiative aims to reduce approval timelines to one or two months from the typical 10 to 12 months for therapies addressing critical health priorities and unmet medical needs.

Investor interest in Revolution Medicines has surged, with the company’s stock rising 166 percent this year amid expectations that Rasonque will become a key treatment option. Following the approval announcement, shares remained steady at $211.70.

Analysts at RBC Capital Markets anticipate that the rapid approval, combined with over 2,000 patients already enrolled in the Expanded Access Program, could generate approximately $28 million in US pancreatic cancer revenue during the third quarter, with fourth-quarter sales potentially reaching $148 million. They project that the drug could ultimately achieve annual sales of $11.5 billion.

The American Cancer Society estimates that around 67,350 individuals will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year. RBC analysts noted that, given the drug’s impressive clinical data and the significant unmet need, the market is likely to support premium pricing for Rasonque.
