The United States carried out limited strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island late on Monday, a few hours after Vice-President JD Vance said he was hopeful that diplomatic efforts to end the war were heading in the right direction.

The attacks were first disclosed by Iranians on social media and later confirmed by US Central Command (Centcom). Reports said the strikes targeted surface-to-air missiles being used against US assets.

The strikes came on the eve of crucial US midterm elections, in which Donald Trump’s Republican party is expected to suffer at the ballot box.

Diplomatic mediators believe that within two days it will become clear whether there is a basis for continued indirect talks between the US and Iran.
