The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to hold local government elections in Punjab on February 7, 2027, with polling to take place in phases across the province. The decision was taken during a hearing of the Punjab local government elections case by a four-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.
Punjab government’s shifting request and reasons for delay
During the proceedings, the Punjab chief secretary told the commission that the provincial government had first asked for local government polls in January or February 2027. The government later recommended holding them in April 2027.
To explain the proposed delay, the chief secretary cited smog, severe fog, adverse weather, Ramadan and the unavailability of teachers for election duties. The ECP nonetheless decided to proceed with the February 7 date, with the elections organised in multiple phases.
