Israeli strikes killed five people and wounded others in the Palestinian territory of Gaza on Wednesday, Gaza’s civil defence agency and a local hospital said.
Asked for comment by AFP, the Israeli army said “we struck terrorists in the area” and added that it would soon provide more information. The strikes came a day after Israelis cast ballots in a tightly contested election that produced no clear winner.
Drone attack in Rafah and strike in Khan Yunis
Mahmoud Bassal, spokesperson for the civil defence, a rescue force operating under Hamas authority, said three people died and several others were hurt, some seriously, in a drone attack in Rafah in the south. The local hospital received three bodies and 15 wounded people, one of whom later died, the civil defence said.

The agency also reported that one more person was killed in a strike in Khan Yunis, also in the south.
Death toll since the ceasefire and the wider war
Since a ceasefire took effect last year, more than 1,500 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the territory’s health ministry, which operates under Hamas. The United Nations considers those figures accurate. The war began on October 7, 2023, after an unprecedented Hamas attack on southern Israel that killed 1,221 people, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. Israel’s military campaign has since destroyed much of Gaza and killed more than 74,500 people, the health ministry said.
