Hamas Exit Won’t End External Control Over Gaza’s Palestinian Lives

The potential end of Hamas’s governance in Gaza signals a shift in the administrative structure of the territory. However, this change is unlikely to affect the fundamental control over the lives of Palestinians residing there. Despite who governs, the sovereignty over Gaza remains contested and heavily influenced by external forces.

Historically, Gaza has been a focal point of conflict and political struggle, with various actors exerting influence over its governance and the daily realities of its population. The lack of true sovereignty has perpetuated challenges in achieving self-determination and stability for Palestinians. This dynamic underscores the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the difficulties in establishing lasting peace.

In a significant development, the transition away from Hamas does not guarantee liberation or autonomy for Gaza’s residents. The broader geopolitical context, including Israeli control over borders, airspace, and resources, continues to shape the conditions under which Palestinians live. Thus, administrative changes alone may not translate into meaningful freedom or sovereignty for the people of Gaza.
