The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has released a security advisory aimed at WhatsApp users, encouraging them to implement key safety measures to protect their accounts from hacking and cyber fraud.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the authority highlighted the ongoing threat posed by cybercriminals who attempt unauthorized access to WhatsApp accounts. To counter these risks, PTA recommended users strengthen their account security settings.
One of the key suggestions includes enabling Security Notifications by navigating to “Settings > Account > Security Notifications” and activating the “Show Security Notifications” option. This feature notifies users whenever there is a change in their account’s security settings, providing an early warning of potential breaches.
Additionally, PTA advised linking a secure and active email address to the WhatsApp account. This step is crucial for account recovery in the event of hacking or other emergencies, ensuring users can regain control swiftly.
In a significant development, the authority also urged users to activate Two-Step Verification. This extra layer of security is designed to prevent unauthorized access by requiring a PIN code in addition to the usual login credentials, thereby enhancing protection against cyber threats.
The PTA emphasized that adopting these straightforward precautions can effectively safeguard personal data, contacts, and other digital information. Conversely, neglecting these measures may expose users to cyber fraud and potential financial losses.
