Google has rolled out new features aimed at simplifying how users share local insights on Google Maps. In a significant development, the Gemini AI can now automatically generate captions when users upload photos or videos of locations. After selecting media, Gemini analyzes the content to suggest captions, which users can modify or remove as needed. This feature is designed to help users quickly add descriptive text when sharing their experiences.
Currently, caption suggestions are available in English on iOS devices in the United States, with plans to expand globally and to Android platforms soon. Meanwhile, Google has also made it easier for users to find appropriate images to share with the community. By enabling media access for Google Maps in their phone settings, users can view photos and videos from recent visits directly within the “Contribute” tab, allowing them to select and post content more conveniently.
Google highlighted that photos and videos help others gain a better understanding of places, including their atmosphere or updated offerings like menus. This enhancement aims to streamline the process of finding and sharing the right images. The photo and video recommendations feature is now accessible worldwide on both iOS and Android devices.
Additionally, Google has introduced new tools to help contributors monitor the impact of their input. Users can now see the total points they have earned displayed prominently in the “Contribute” tab. Profile pages will showcase the user’s “Local Guide” level, which reflects points accumulated through various contributions such as uploading photos, writing reviews, answering questions, and verifying facts.
The company has refreshed its achievement badges to clearly indicate whether a contributor is an “expert fact-finder,” “master photographer,” or a “rising novice.” Furthermore, new gold-colored profile designs have been introduced to make it easier to identify top-level contributors. These updates support Google’s community of over 500 million contributors who share valuable photos, reviews, and videos, helping others make informed decisions about where to go and what to do.
Given that Google Maps depends heavily on its contributors to keep information accurate and up to date, these improvements aim to streamline the contribution process and enhance user engagement.
