Peralta and Rodriguez to Pitch in Subway Series Decider Sunday

The New York Mets, despite a challenging start to their season, demonstrated resilience on Saturday night, signaling they still possess competitive spirit. They aim to conclude their home series positively on Sunday afternoon against the New York Yankees in the deciding game of this year’s first Subway Series.

The Mets plan to start Freddy Peralta, who holds a 3-3 record with a 3.10 ERA, while the Yankees will counter with Elmer Rodriguez, who is 0-1 with a 5.19 ERA. On Saturday, the Mets evened the series with a 6-3 victory, powered by Mark Vientos, who drove in three runs. Relief pitcher Luke Weaver played a crucial role by securing six important outs under pressure.

Currently, the Mets boast a 4-1 record during this homestand, a bright spot amid their overall struggles. They remain at the bottom of the NL East with a 19-26 record and face significant challenges with injuries, as seven players from their Opening Day roster are sidelined. The situation worsened when pitcher Clay Holmes suffered a broken right fibula after being struck by a line drive in Friday’s game, an incident that visibly affected the team’s morale, manager Carlos Mendoza.

Saturday’s win, however, helped boost the team’s spirits. The Mets utilized five pitchers to limit the Yankees to nine hits while forcing the opposing pitchers to expend a high number of pitches. Weaver entered the game in a critical moment during the seventh inning with the bases loaded and the Mets leading 5-3. He successfully escaped the jam and continued pitching effectively into the eighth inning.

Manager Mendoza expressed confidence that the team still has enough talent to turn their season around despite the setbacks. Meanwhile, the Yankees faced another disappointment with this loss, marking their second consecutive series defeat. Their recent offensive struggles are notable, having scored three runs or fewer in seven of their last ten games.

Although the Yankees lead the American League in runs scored, they have not won a game this season when scoring fewer than four runs since late April. On Saturday, they squandered multiple scoring opportunities, leaving 11 runners on base and struggling significantly with runners in scoring position. Their final five batters were retired quickly on just a few pitches.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone acknowledged that the team had chances to secure the win but failed to deliver the crucial hit when it was needed most. Looking ahead to Sunday’s game, Freddy Peralta enters in good form after pitching six strong innings in his previous start. Elmer Rodriguez, recently promoted from Triple-A to replace the injured Max Fried, will make only his third major league start in this pivotal matchup.
