The United States has authorized visas for Iranian leaders to participate in the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session in New York next week. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to deliver a speech on Wednesday during the high-level meeting.
In a notable development, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will address the General Assembly remotely via video link after the US declined to grant him a visa. The General Assembly passed a resolution permitting Abbas to deliver his remarks virtually.
The US State Department confirmed that the Iranian delegation will be attending the session. Reports indicate that Washington has issued a visa specifically to Pezeshkian for his participation. However, Iranian officials visiting the US will be subject to certain restrictions, including prohibitions on purchasing luxury items and joining exclusive clubs, a State Department spokesperson.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to lead Pakistan’s delegation at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The Foreign Office stated that Sharif will outline Pakistan’s stance on key regional and global issues in his address.
He is expected to emphasize Pakistan’s priorities such as sustainable development, climate change, counterterrorism, Islamophobia, global economic challenges, UN reforms, and concerns impacting the Global South. Additionally, Sharif will highlight the situations in Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine.
During his visit to the United States, the prime minister will participate in high-level events and engage in bilateral meetings with world leaders and the UN secretary-general. Discussions are anticipated to focus on Pakistan’s views regarding regional stability, international cooperation, and multilateralism.
Following his US engagements, Sharif will travel to London before returning to Pakistan.
