Pakistan is intensifying its diplomatic initiatives to help resolve the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Newly-appointed Foreign Secretary Asim Iftikhar Ahmad emphasized Islamabad’s commitment to achieving a peaceful settlement through dialogue and mechanisms supported by the United Nations and the international community.

In a significant development, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN highlighted the country’s active role in advocating for a ceasefire, easing regional tensions, and encouraging all parties to return to negotiations amid a deteriorating situation. He underscored that the foremost priority remains halting hostilities and reducing conflict intensity.

Ahmad pointed out that the UN Security Council Charter mandates resolving disputes through negotiation rather than warfare, reinforcing Pakistan’s stance on peaceful conflict resolution. While acknowledging the worsening circumstances, he stressed Pakistan’s awareness of its responsibility to help prevent further escalation in the region.

Notably, the envoy referenced Pakistan’s involvement in the Iran-US confrontation, noting Islamabad’s prominent diplomatic efforts during that crisis. He remarked that Pakistan was among the leading nations engaged in managing tensions during that period.

Furthermore, Ahmad mentioned the Makkah agreement, which includes Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and Turkiye, highlighting Islamabad’s increased responsibilities aimed at fostering peace and stability across the region. This trilateral pact reflects Pakistan’s strategic role in regional diplomacy.

The remarks come as the conflict continues to expand, impacting Gulf security, energy infrastructure, and vital maritime routes. The ongoing crisis has also intensified pressures on Pakistan, which is balancing its mediator role with defense commitments to Saudi Arabia under the Makkah agreement.

Pakistan has consistently advocated for dialogue and de-escalation, particularly during the US-Iran tensions, maintaining open diplomatic channels through frameworks like the Islamabad MoU. Ahmad dismissed criticisms suggesting the United Nations is ineffective in peace efforts, affirming the UN’s ongoing role in resolving international disputes.

He also emphasized that longstanding conflicts such as those in Palestine and Kashmir should be addressed in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, reinforcing Pakistan’s call for adherence to international law in conflict resolution.
