Indus Waters Treaty Key to Regional Peace and Stability, Says Dar

The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan, has long been recognized as a critical framework for managing shared water resources. Finance Minister Dar emphasized that this agreement has played a vital role in maintaining regional peace and stability despite ongoing tensions between the two countries. The treaty allocates water from the Indus River and its tributaries, ensuring cooperation over a resource essential to both nations’ agriculture and livelihoods.

In a significant development, Dar’s remarks underscore the treaty’s importance amid fluctuating diplomatic relations in South Asia. The agreement has survived multiple conflicts and remains one of the few successful examples of bilateral cooperation in the region. Its continued observance is crucial for preventing water disputes that could escalate into broader conflicts, highlighting the treaty’s role beyond mere resource sharing.

Meanwhile, experts note that the Indus Waters Treaty serves as a model for transboundary water management worldwide. Its success demonstrates how legal frameworks can foster dialogue and conflict resolution over contested natural resources. As climate change and population growth increase water scarcity, the treaty’s principles of cooperation and equitable distribution gain even greater significance for regional security and sustainable development.
