Iran rejects role in Hamburg plot against German Jewish leaders

Iran’s Foreign Ministry has summoned Germany’s ambassador, Axel Dittmann, after a Hamburg court found two men guilty of plotting to kill two leaders of Jewish organisations at Tehran’s behest. Tehran accused Berlin of making “baseless political allegations.”

The summons came after Germany summoned Iran’s ambassador, Majid Nili Ahmadabadi, on Monday over claims that Tehran was behind the plot to assassinate the two pro-Israel public figures.

Tehran dismisses German court findings as political

In a statement broadcast by the state news agency IRNA, the Foreign Ministry said accusing Iran of security offences had long been a tactic used by the “Zionist regime” and certain Western nations. It argued that giving a judicial appearance to unfounded claims would not add credibility and would undermine the German judiciary.

Court jails two men over Iran-linked plot

The court convicted a Danish national and an Afghan national for planning to target the president of Germany’s main Jewish community group and the head of the German-Israeli society. The Dane, partially identified as Ali Hassan S, was jailed for eight-and-a-half years, while the Afghan, recruited as his accomplice, received four-and-a-half years.

The court said Iran’s intelligence service had steered the pair, who were arrested in Denmark last year and extradited. The judge described their offences as “terrorist activities orchestrated by Iran.”

Berlin warns Tehran of legal consequences

The German Foreign Ministry said on X that the Iranian ambassador had been summoned and that Tehran would not be allowed to “threaten our free society.” It said the “malicious assassination attempts against Josef Schuster and Volker Beck will have legal consequences.”
